Jack E. Foegley

SOUTH BEND - Jack Emerson Foegley, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away at his home on Thursday morning, February 18, 2010. He was 82 years old. He was born March 24, 1927, in South Bend, IN, the son of Robert and Mary (Heim) Foegley, and was a graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School.
Following graduation in 1945 he was drafted into the United States Army near the end of WW II and served during the occupation of Germany.
Jack had a wonderful, light sense of humor. Children and dogs loved him. And he had a great love of anything outdoors, especially fishing. For more than 30 years, Jack and his family, including his brother Robert, and nephew and best fishing buddy John Foegley, traveled to Manitou Falls, Ontario, Canada, to spend two weeks catching northern and walleye. It was a time and place he always looked forward to.
In 1950 he married Carol Hostetler and they raised two children together, Diane and David. While his children were growing up Jack kept horses for Diane's 4-H projects and raised his own beef on five acres south of town.
On November 8, 1987, in Bloomington, IN, Jack was united in marriage to Laine Myers Henkel, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and John Brown of Evansville, IN; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Sherri Foegley of Fishers, IN; a stepdaughter, Leah McChesney, and her husband, Rob of South Bend; five grandchildren, Jessica Brown, Amanda Foegley, Jordan Foegley, Nathan Foegley and Sebastian McChesney. Also surviving are his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sarita Foegley of South Bend; along with several nieces and nephews, two aunts and many cousins.
Jack was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Katherine Petrie in 1996, and by a stepson, Jeffrey Henkel in 1992.
Mr. Foegley was one of three founders and eventual president of Maron Products in Mishawaka, retiring after 41 years managing the company. He was a longtime, active member of First United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, where he served as Youth Director, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, member of the Staff Parish Board, and permanent member of the Memorial Investment Committee. He also chaired numerous other committees over the years. In 1972 he began the Appalachian Mission trips to Kentucky which the youth group still supports today. He was a delegate to the United Methodist Church Annual Conference for many years. He also served as President of the Fairfax Homeowners Association, and served on the Board of the YMCA.
Services celebrating the life of Jack Foegley will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, 201 East Third Street, Mishawaka. Rev. Larry Whitehead and Rev. Joyce Kuhn will officiate. The service will conclude with military rites. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, and one hour prior to services Tuesday in the church.
