SOUTH BEND - Jim Hendricks, 85, of South Bend, passed away April 5, 2012, at Waterford of Edison Lakes after a brief battle with lung cancer. Mr. Hendricks was born in Nortonville, Kentucky, on December 25, 1926, to Raymond and Carrie (Grace) Hendricks. He attended elementary school in Nortonville, and then moved to South Bend where he attended Riley High School.

He served in the United States Merchant Marines and the United States Army. After discharge, he married Marcille Larimer on August 30, 1947, at East Methodist Church in Mishawaka, Indiana. She preceded him in death on May 12, 2008.

Jim was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Jim was the proud owner of The Toasty Shop, known originally for its foot-long hot dogs and frostys. He opened his business in 1949 and expanded several times to develop an excellent family dining experience. He valued his business integrity and the customers he served. He was a member of Masonic Blue Lodge, a member of the Valley of South Bend Scottish Rite, a member of Mizpah Shrine, was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Avalon Grotto, and a Lifetime Member of Elks Lodge 235. He also sponsored trips and accompanied children and their families to the Chicago Shrine Hospital for medical purposes. He was a past president of the Indiana Restaurant Association and an officer of the National Restaurant Association. He was also a recipient of the Indiana Kentucky Colonel Award. Jim sponsored several youth and adult baseball, basketball and softball teams over the years, and enjoyed many memories of the Toasty Flyers. He was the original sponsor of the Optimist Leagues and the South Side Little League teams.

Jim is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Hendricks, Edwardsburg, MI; three daughters and spouses, Vickie Irwin, Kendallville, Cathie and Roger Horein, South Bend, Jan and Roy Vice, Palm Harbor, FL; 15 grandchildren and spouses, Jeannie Hendricks, Shawna and William Pinkton, Julie Hendricks, Andrew Hendricks and fiancée, Carrie Sailor, Kimberly Irwin, Indianapolis, Jim and Emmy Irwin, Noblesville, Kristen Irwin, Carmel, Greg and Heather Horein, Goshen, Eric and Cindy Bastine, Pacifica, CA, Amy and Ryan Kring, South Bend, Emily and Gabriel Hernandez, Mexico City, Mexico, Ryan Bastine and fiancée, Marie Wierzbicki, South Bend, Rick and Haley Vice, Clearwater, FL, John and Sarah Vice, Chandler, AZ; 18 great-grandchildren, Katie Hendricks, Edwardsburg, MI, Amanda, Alex, Stephanie, Skyler, Gabe, Jessica, Lindsey, William and Michael Pinkton, Abbie Sailor, Benjamen, Alec and Hadden Irwin, Brady and Carly Horein, Rylan and Lucy Kring.

The family sincerely thanks the caregivers and Hospice who so lovingly tended to Jim in his last week of life.

Services will be held Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, Indiana. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 9, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel.
