Joan Ruth (Baker) Cunningham
April 20, 1927 ~ March 29, 2013 (age 85)
Joan R. Cunningham, 85, of South Bend, IN was called home Friday, March 29, 2013. She was born on April 20, 1927 in South Bend to Roland E. and Helen (Goebel) Baker. After graduation from Riley High School on June 29, 1946 she married the love of her life Ralph Cunningham who preceded her in death in 2009. They lived in South Bend their entire life spending winters in Venice, Florida.
Her sixty plus year marriage, her family, and playing cards were her passions, her hobbies, and her major interests. Mrs. Cunningham is survived by her daughter, Janice (Lyle West) Smith of South Bend; two sons, Bob (Mary Rast) Cunningham of Maryville, IL and Jim Cunningham of South Bend; six grandchildren, Doug Cunningham of Henrietta, NY, Dave Cunningham of Reno, NV, Timm Hurley of South Bend, Elton Hurley of South Bend, Cammi Lewis of Mishawaka and Jaci (Yami) Malindima of South Bend; great grandchildren, Chris & Makinzie Anderson, Airic & Joshua Hurley and Alyssa & Zachary Lewis and two sisters, Mary Haslett of South Bend, and Catherine “Tap” Minegar of Osceola. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah Hurley in 1994
She retired in 1992 after thirty years of service at Kroger. Previously she worked at the Studebaker Credit Union, Indiana Bell, and at raising her family. She was a member of Broadway Christian Parish United Methodist Church where she served on the meal team for over twenty years.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Broadway Christian Parish United Methodist Church, 1412 South Carroll St. South Bend, IN 46613. Entombment will take place at Riverview Mausoleum, South Bend. Friends may visit from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN.
