SOUTH BEND - Charles M. Plank, Jr., 85, of South Bend, IN passed away at 6:22 p.m. Monday, November 21, 2011 in his home. He was born on April 2, 1926 in South Bend, IN to Charles M. and Hazel (Lear) Plank Sr.
On July 1, 1950 in Angola, IN, he married Rose M. Ashley. Mr. Plank is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Rose M. Plank; daughter, Cathy (Pat) Zirille of Mishawaka, IN; two sons, Mark S. (Brad McFarland) Plank of Alexandria, VA and Jeffrey (Lori) Plank of South Bend, IN; three grandchildren, Stacy (Shane Thompson) Zirille, Michael (Nicolle) Zirille and Dean Kizer; five great grandchildren, Landen and Alayna Zirille, Justin Smith, Gavin and Kylee Thompson; brother, Robert (Patricia) Plank of South Bend, IN and nieces and nephews.
Mr. Plank was a lifelong resident. He was a James Whitcomb Riley class of 1944 graduate and a graduate of Tri State College in Angola.
He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Plank was a staff engineer for Bendix Corp. and Honeywell for thirty-nine years. He was a former member of the First Christian Church of South Bend and a member of Southside Christian Church.
The family would like to thank the Center for Hospice Care for their care and compassion. Special thanks to Cindy Mullin, for being such an "angel" to our family.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 25, 2011 at Southside Christian Church, 1329 E. Jackson Road, South Bend, IN, with Martha Carroll, minister, officiating. Friends may visit with the family after the service. Lunch will be served. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Charles M. Plank Jr. may be offered to The Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Ct., South Bend, IN 46637 or Southside Christian Church.
