Robert Cass - Class Of 1942 VIEW PROFILE

Robert Cass

Robert Cass

Bob died at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital after a long illness on June 19, 2010. He was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1923 where he lived with his maiden Aunt throughout his boyhood, attending Riley High followed by Kalamazoo College.

His schooling was interrupted when he saw a poster proclaiming "Win your Navy Wings of Gold." He promptly did just that becoming a Lieutenant in the Naval Air Corps during World War II. Much of his time while in the service was spent in San Diego flying TBM Avengers and training pilots for carrier duty.

Returning to his home he attended and graduated from Michigan State, only then to return to the Bay Area to enter the field of Real Estate, specializing in commercial development. He formed his own company, Douglas Associates, in Walnut Creek , where he became the original developer of Twin Oaks followed by the Douglas Drive complex in Martinez.

He had met his second wife, Joyce Pringle Haskins and when they married he became the stepfather to four children: Tim (Carol) Haskins of Fremont, Debby Horton of Walnut Creek, Jill Powell of Martinez, and Polly (Alvin) Olson of Benicia. He also became the step-grandfather off eight granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

Joyce and Bob subsequently lived in Walnut Creek and Diablo working and designing a house at Sea Ranch where they would retire. Beautiful but remote, they would move one more time to Cloverdale where he served as a Planning Commissioner and was involved with other city projects. Bob will be remembered as a generous and loving man, striving always to do his best with each endeavor that he encountered.

As he requested, there will be no services.
