SOUTH BEND - Daniel P. Holcomb, 55, of South Bend, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Friday, July 3rd, in his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Holcomb was born on June 16, 1954, in South Bend, and had resided in the area his lifetime. Daniel retired from the South Bend City Parks Dept. on June 16, 2009, after 36 years of service. He was a carpenter for the parks department.

He is survived by his parents, Hoy N. and Ruth H. (Bates) Holcomb of South Bend. A daughter, Danielle L. Holcomb of South Bend. Two step-sons, Scott F. and Christopher G. Vaerewyck, both of South Bend. Five sisters, Sharon R. (Eugene) Morgan of Ft. Stockton, Texas, Mary Ann (Gail) Rock of Phoenix, AZ, Rebecca S. (Ron) Wilson of South Bend, Faith C. (Garland) Baker of Mishawaka, IN, and Gloria G. (Emile) Waddell of Ft. Stockton, Texas. Two brothers, Nathan H. (Beverly) Holcomb of Atmore, Alabama, and Thomas W. Holcomb of South Bend, IN. Four grandchildren whom he loved and cherished, Jose R. Ortiz, Ricky D. Ortiz, Christopher A. Vaerewyck and Alexis Vaerewyck.

Daniel was a 1972 graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School, a member of Teamster Local Union 364 and he loved to collect Indian and cowboy memorabilia.

He was also a member of the Bible Way Apostolic Church in Nappanee, Indiana. He will be dearly missed by his loving family, his church family, and all who had the opportunity to know him during his life journey. He was a loving father and grandfather.

Visitation hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, July 6th, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/ Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral Services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 7th, in the Bible Way Apostolic Church located at 26148 US #6 East, Nappanee, IN 46550. Elder Jimmy L. Wyant will be officiating and burial to follow at Southlawn Cemetery South Bend, IN. The family request that, in lieu of flowers, PLEASE make all memorial contributions to the family or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled the arrangements and extend its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Holcomb family.
