Edward "ED" I. Friend

July 30, 1936 ~ May 10, 2012 (age 75)

 

Edward "Ed" Friend, 75, of South Bend, IN passed away at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.   He was born in Chicago, IL to Herbert M. and Eve (Grossman) Friend on July 30, 1936. On November 13, 1962, he married the former Mary Jane Miller. He served his hometown of South Bend as a police officer for nearly forty-four years.
 
Ed was a graduate of Riley High School and Indiana University. He was most proud to have served in the United States Army Infantry achieving the rank of Captain. Prior to his police career, he was Vice President of Worths of Indiana, Inc., a family business.
 
Ed was an accomplished photographer and became known for his creative metal works. He and his wife, Jane, were known for their radio personalities on WAMJ and WSBT.   He also had a radio program on WTTV, Bloomington.   He was the host and producer of Signal 8 and Kid's Adventure Zone on the LESEA Television Network.
 
In his most recent years, Ed was the South Bend Police Department's liaison for Adult Protective Services, Mental Health and Geriatric Medical Services. He was also the creator and columnist for Friend's Advice published weekly in the South Bend Tribune. In 1996 he was inducted into the South Bend Community Hall of Fame for his public service. He served many civic endeavors and had a good time helping people. His was a life where success was truly a journey, not a conclusion.
 
Ed is survived by his wife fifty years, Jane; three sons, Edward H. (Kathleen) Friend of Oreana, IL, Thomas M. Friend of Chicago, IL and John T. Amber of Jupiter, FL; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Lauren, Michael, Wayne, Justin, Kalie, Valerie and Brittanie and four great grandchildren, Jasmine, Bennett, Annabelle and Lincoln. He is also survived by his sister, Sondra (Dr. Howard) Engel of South Bend, IN and his brother, Dr. George (Ruth) Friend of South Bend, IN.   He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Deborah Lee Cira on October 27, 2008; his son, Robert Amber on October 4, 2009 and a brother, John Charles Friend.
 
Private services will take place.   Ed will receive his friends from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2012 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend. Burial will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek, IN.
