SOUTH BEND - Larry D. Tobey, 76, residing in South Bend, passed away at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011, in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's Healthcare Center following a brief illness. He was born April 29, 1934, in Howe, IN, a son of Gerald and Isabelle (Hixson) Tobey, and lived in the South Bend-Mishawaka area most of his life.

He graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School.

On September 5, 1954, in Faith United Methodist Church, South Bend, Larry and Lona M. Davidson were united in marriage. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lona; his daughter, Lisa Varda of Mishawaka; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Dawn Tobey of Osceola; four grandchildren, Michael (Shawn) Varda, Brandon Varda, Jenna Tobey and Alex Tobey. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Miley Varda, and Liam Tobey; along with his sister, Jane Pica of South Bend.

Larry was a natural born salesman, and consequently worked in sales all of his adult life. He loved people and never met a stranger. He was a lifelong active member of Faith United Methodist Church, serving on numerous boards, was an usher, and sang in the choir. He enjoyed golfing and camping, sang with a Barbershop Chorus, and was a member of Bowlers Country Club.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army.

Services celebrating the life of Larry Tobey will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 5th, in Faith United Methodist Church, 802 E. Ewing Ave., South Bend. Rev. Keith McFarren will officiate. Interment will take place at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. today in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, and one hour prior to services Tuesday in the church. Expressions of sympathy on behalf of Mr. Tobey may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, 802 E.
