George Wesley Grundy

George Wesley Grundy

February 5, 1943 - October 15, 2021

George Wesley Grundy, 78, was born on February 5, 1943, to the union of Phillip Theodore and Angeline Doretha (Johnson) Grundy in South Bend, Indiana. He was raised with his four brothers Charles, Philip, Michael, and Leonard, all graduates of Riley High School, who all helped create the strong Grundy family bond that has been exhibited for decades.

George married the former Beatrice Kyle on January 6, 1965, in South Bend, Indiana. Shortly after marrying, George and Bea moved to Beloit, where he initially worked at General Motors Assembly Plant in Janesville, Wisconsin. A few months later, George began working for the Chrysler Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Illinois, where he remained for 35 years and retired as an inspector in June of 2001.

George, a true Grundy patriarch, was devoted to his family. When his children were young, he actively participated in their extracurricular activities; he was a coach, a den master for his son’s boy scout troops, and never missed any of his daughter’s basketball games.

George was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. They all had their special names for him which included “Big Daddy”, “Bodee”, “Bobee”. He enjoyed hearing and telling jokes, playing basketball, bowling, cards, dominos, and he always kept his lawn and cars pristine.

George accepted Christ in his life and was baptized on May 1, 2005. George was a member of New Zion Baptist Church in Beloit, where he served on the trustee board and helped, faithfully, with the food pantry along with his breakfast buddies Anthony Range, Eugene Glover and Anthony Casey.

On Friday, October 15, 2021, God, in his infinite wisdom and grace, called George home; he passed peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. To cherish his invaluable memory, George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beatrice; children, Darryl (Marla) Grundy Sr. of Arlington, Texas, David (Crystal) Grundy of Beloit, Donald (Cortney) Grundy of Rockford, Illinois, and Danielle (Jarrett Jr.) Martin of Red Oak, Texas; brother, Michael (Marina) Grundy of Granger, Indiana; grandchildren, Darryl Jr. (Nikki), Devon (Makayla), Justice, and Jarrett Martin III; great-grandchildren Gianna, Laila, and Aiden; special cousin, like a daughter, Nina Johnson of Beloit; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jennye Grundy, Christine Grundy, Catherine Grundy, Joe (Ida) Kyle, Myrtle (John) Doaks, Juanita Kyle, Clara Kyle, and Isaiah Kyle; “special” brothers and sister, Eugene and Ruth Pulliam, and William Toles; “special” niece, Effie Donaldson; “special” nephew, Terry (Sandra) Donaldson; "special" cousin, Alberta Francis; noteworthy neighbors, Lamont and Jean Weaver; along with numerous other relatives and friends who showed care and concern during his short illness. George was a role model to many young men, which is more evidence of his character and unparalleled disposition. Please know if we missed anyone, you are all appreciated. Charge it to our heads and not our hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Charles, Phillip, and Leonard.
