It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Claudia Burks, who transitioned from this Earth on March 26, 2023, after a lengthy illness. Claudia peacefully left this world to be with her siblings and parents


Claudia was born on December 13, 1943, in Ruleville, MS, to Willie and Beatrice (Townsend) Burks. The family briefly lived in Chicago, IL, before settling in South Bend, IN, where Claudia spent her childhood years. She attended Franklin Elementary and graduated from Riley High School in 1963.


Shortly after graduation, Claudia followed her older sister Willa Mae (Leach) and her husband Jessie Busch to Beloit, Wisconsin, where she was employed by Fairbanks. After returning to South Bend, she attended Ivy Tech and became one of the first black students to graduate from their nursing program. Claudia started her nursing career at St. Joseph Hospital and later moved to Memorial Hospital, where she retired added dedicating 34 years of service as an LPN and as a Union Steward for Teamsters Local 364.


Claudia loved to crochet and was known for making beautiful baby blankets and afghans. She also enjoyed doing hidden word puzzles, watching Law and Order and Judge Judy. Claudia was also known for her famous spaghetti salad and deviled eggs.


When she was in better health, Claudia attended church at Rhema Word, where she was an active and dedicated member on the Mother’s Board.
Claudia leaves behind her daughter Georgiana Burks of South Bend and her granddaughter Breahanna (Chad) Wagner of Mishawaka. She also leaves behind three brothers: Harris (Buster) of Tucker, GA, George (Elaine) of Decatur, GA, and Clarence of South Bend. Claudia was preceded in death by her parents Willie Sr. and Beatrice (Townsend) Burks, her sister Willa Mae Busch, her brother Willie (Big Burks), her sister Rosie Burks Walker, and her beloved dog Honey. Claudia also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other family members to cherish her memory.


At Claudia's request, a cremation will take place, and there will be a private memorial service for family and close friends on April 29, 2023, at Cobb Funeral Home in South Bend. On behalf of the Burks family, we would like to thank everyone for their calls, texts, and prayers during this emotional time. Please continue to keep them uplifted in prayer. Claudia will be deeply missed, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
