SOUTH BEND - Duane Allen Beckner, 80, of South Bend died Thursday, November 21, 2013 in his residence. Mr. Beckner was born February 24, 1933 in South Bend and was a lifetime area resident. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Lee Beckner and his adoptive parents, Nellie and Harry Bowles. He is survived by many friends including, Richard Rockstroh (Loanna) and his landlords, Larry and Sandy Schohl all of South Bend.

Duane was a 1951 graduate of Riley High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a long time member of the former First Christian Church and had just recently joined First United Methodist Church both in South Bend. He retired from the Grand Trunk Railroad as a traffic manager. He was blessed with a terrific memory and could remember many of his friends' birthdays, anniversaries and other special dates. For many years he served as an umpire with the Babe Ruth League of South Bend. 

But among the many activities he enjoyed, driving to Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City with his traveling buddies, his cousin, Paul Walegzko, Jack Long, and Matt Morris all of South Bend was something he cherished the most.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 333 N. Main St. with Rev Mary Hubbard officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 333 N. Main St., South Bend, IN, 46601. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting with arrangements.
