Marie Irene (Stickley) Delahousaye

Marie Irene (Stickley) Delahousaye, 93, of Yelm, Wa., died March 24, 2011 at her East Haven home, from complications due to congestive heart disease. She was preceded in death, in 1961, by her husband, a Navy Veteran, Joseph Francis Delahousaye, a sister, Ruth Ellen (Stickley) Lawrence, a sister, Joyce (Stickley) Smith.

Born in South Bend, Indiana, March 19, 1918, one of seven children of Arthur and Lou Ellen Stickley, she previously lived in San Diego, Ca. and Kalamazoo, Mi.

She graduated from South Bend Riley High School and worked at Bendix Corp. in her youth.

During most of her adulthood, she worked as a secretary in the Youth Bureau at the Kalamazoo Police Dept. and as the head secretary to the Dean of the Business Law School at Western Michigan University. She was a Sweet Adeline's Barbershop member and enjoyed music and dancing, especially that of Lawrence Welk. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, walking, working in the yard and sunbathing. She loved dogs, gorillas and especially her cat, Cindi Lou, which she loved as much as any person. After retiring at the age of 62, she moved to North Park in San Diego where she was an active member of the San Diego Zoo and a Cinema Society Usher for many years. Throughout her life, she stayed connected with family members from all across the Country, which brought her great joy.

Surviving is a brother, Ralph Stickley (Isabel), a brother-in-law, Wayne Lawrence, Sr., a brother-in-law, Norris Smith (Eleanor), a son, Darrell Preston Delahousaye (Victoria Minnick), a daughter, Constance Delahoussaye, a daughter-in-law, Diane Hoekstra, grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Brutger, Darrell Joseph Delahousaye, Darrelyn J. Kamerman (Victoria Nuesca) and three great-grandchildren.

According to her wishes, her ashes will be scattered at sea by the United States Navy. She asked that she be remembered only by the "Toast of a Cold Beer".

In lieu of flowers, those who desire may make a donation in her memory to the San Diego Zoo, her favorite place to spend time. Checks can be made out to "The San Diego Zoo", attn: Memorial Dept. P.O. Box 120551, San Diego, Ca. 92112-0551. A note designating the donation to the "Memory of Marie Delahousaye" should be included along with the donor's name and address. It is hoped that a plaque in her honor can be placed in the next new exhibit at the Zoo.
