SOUTH BEND - Ruth E. Peli, age 88, formerly of Tuxedo Drive, South Bend, passed away Sunday morning at the Sanctuary of Holy Cross. Ruth was born on June 2, 1925, in South Bend, to the late Ben A. and Bessie E. (Frick) Fetters, and had lived in this area all of her life.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Byron Smith Jr. and James Peli. One brother, Robert Fetters, preceded Ruth in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Patti Nemeth of Granger, Shelley Smith of South Bend; three sons, John (Jodi) McDonald of Lagrange, IL, Tim (Kathleen) McDonald and Mark (Jeanne) McDonald, both of South Bend. There are 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Richard (Dorothy) Fetters of South Carolina.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2014, at St. Anthony's de Padua Catholic Church, 2310 East Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46615, where Ruth was a devout parishioner. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Palmer Funeral Home - River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN 46615, and one hour prior to services at the church. A Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Ruth, like her father and brother Robert, dedicated much of her adult life to American Legion Post 50, where she was an auxiliary member and worked in a clerical position. Her father and brother were Past Commanders at that same Legion. Ruth enjoyed playing bridge and spending time at their Lake George cottage in Angola, IN. She loved music; her entire life, she would entertain guests with her piano playing and singing. She greeted everyone with a warm smile and treasured her time with family and friends; in her later years her daughter Shelley was her constant companion. Memorial contributions in memory of Ruth E.
