Peter Voynovich, 82, of Sun City Center, Fla., formerly of South Bend, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2006, in his residence. Pete was born on November 14, 1923, in South Bend to John and Helen (Chichak) Voynovich. He graduated from Riley High School in 1943, where he played football and basketball. Mr. Voynovich was employed by Studebaker, was the owner of Voyno's Tavern and retired from Olinger. In the 1950's he lived and ran the 5th District Democratic Club. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of the Elks Club and Sts. Peter & Paul Serbian Orthodox Church (past president). 

On Thursday he played his last round of golf. In 1990 he won the South Bend Senior Metro Golf Tournament. Pete played regularly in the Serbian Golf Tournament around the country, and he was the man to beat. Pete loved and cheered for Notre Dame. He was a life-long fan and attended many games, and in the 1960's was a regular in the press box. Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Miller, they married December 25, 1944 in Miami, Florida. Also surviving are a daughter, Barbara (Wayne) Chevrie of South Bend; a son, Michael Voynovich of Florida; five grandchildren, Lori Chevrie, Karla Chevrie, Nicholas (Danielle) Chevrie, Michael J. Voynovich, and Matthew R. Voynovich; a sister, Zorka (Ken) DeFreeuw of Sun City Center, Fla.; a brother, Steve (Gerry) Voynovich of Port Orange, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Helen 'Duke" Voynovich of South Bend. Pete was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Mike Voynovich. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2006, in Sts. Peter & Paul Serbian Orthodox Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 Monday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, where a prayer service will be recited at 7:00pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Sts. Peter & Paul Serbian Orthodox Church.
