Dec. 1, 1933 - March 25, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Joan Marjorie Glanders Geary, 79, residing in South Bend, IN, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was born on Dec. 1, 1933, in South Bend, IN, to August and Helen (Kroll) VanDerHeyden, and has remained a lifelong resident.

In 1954, at St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend, she married James Lee "Jim" Glanders who worked at Graffis Furniture as a manager and designer. He preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1983. He was the son of Walter & Jeannie Glanders of Elkhart.

In 1989, at St. Matthew's Cathedral, she married John D. "Jack" Geary Jr. Jack is the son of Margaret & John Geary of Chicago, IL. Jo is survived by her husband, John D. "Jack" Geary Jr.; 2 daughters, Juliet Glanders (Larry) Brown of Coral Springs, FL, who works for Broward County Parks Dept., Jeanne Leigh Glanders of South Bend, who is a librarian at the Elkhart Public Library; and son, Geoff August (Karen) Glanders of Noblesville, IN. He is owner and President of August Mack Environmental, Inc., whose home office is in Indianapolis, IN. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Zachary Brown and Sarah (Jason) Williams, Eric, Sam & Charles Glanders; her brother, Tom (Judy) VanDerHeyden of South Bend, IN; Jack's brother, William (Nancy) Geary of Wilmette, IL; his sister, Jean (Paul) Kennedy of Edina, MN; Jack's daughter, Laura (Walt) Ginter of South Bend, IN; his sons, Mike (Emily) Geary of Royal Oak, MI; John (Cheryl) Geary of South Bend, IN; and grandchildren, Andrew, Emma & Sarah Ginter, Sean & Tyler Geary, Megan & Amanda Geary; and Jim's brother, David (Pat) Glanders. Jo was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Gus VanDerHeyden, sister-in-law, Jean Stackhouse, and brother-in-law, Walter Glanders.

Jo was a 1951 graduate of Riley High School. She graduated in 1954 with a degree in business education from Indiana University. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1973. She taught 3rd grade at Stanley Clark School from 1973 until her retirement in 1998. She served on most academic committees at one time or another. She was also the Head of the English Department and Director of Summer Programs. She administered admissions testing for grades K through 8 from 1984 until 1995, and qualified to administer and grade The Gesell Test for school readiness and age appropriate behavior.

Her greatest joy was spending time reading and with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed visiting the various campuses where her grandchildren attended college and places where they lived.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2013, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan St., South Bend. Graveside services & burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
