Leon Henry Townsend

Leon Henry Townsend

June 14, 1958 ~ October 2, 2023 (age 65)

Leon Henry Townsend passed away Monday, October 2, 2023, at Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Leon was born June 14, 1958, in South Bend, Indiana to the late James Hunt and Gloria (Townsend) Burton, and resided in South Bend, Indiana all his life. Leon was raised by his Paternal Grandmother, Anna Bell Hunt, whom he loved very much. Leon loved her cooking, life-learning lessons, and their fishing adventures together. Leon graduated from Riley High School in 1976.

Leon’s employment included the Ceta program, Gates Chevy World, Acropack Inc., the TD Trucking Institute, and the AM General Hummer plant. Leon’s hobbies included fishing, playing checkers, and watching old Western movies. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the “big house” listening to music, playing basketball at Johnson Park, (Southeast side) shooting dice, and just enjoying life. Leon was also a great big brother to Tracey and Crystal; he once rode his bike in the wintertime to get Tracey a pacifier. As it was a Binky pacifier, that became Tracey’s nickname to this day. Leon loved to travel. He traveled to over 40 states around the map with his semi-truck driver buddy, “Big Wheels” Daryl Lewis, and enjoyed every opportunity he got to travel.

Leon leaves to cherish his memory one daughter: LaDonya Townsend (Kwame Lewis) of South Bend, Indiana, two sons: Deyone Townsend of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Dominick Townsend (Jessica Medina), of South Bend Indiana, three grandsons: Quasean T. Steed, Jaden Townsend, and Jace Townsend, three granddaughters: Zayda Townsend, Skylar Townsend, and Rihana Towsend, one great-grandson: Quasean T. Steed Jr., three greatgranddaughters: Saniyah Steed, Kaleyah Steed, and Khylee Steed, one sister, Jacquelyn Wright, and one brother: Ernest Townsend, both of South Bend, Indiana, four Aunts & Uncles: Willa Mae Hunt (Paul, H. Dunlap), Alice K. Hunt (Frank L. Bass), four nieces and nephews: Kevin D. Williams, Dareen M. Diggins, D’Anndra Lewis, and Jasmine Lewis, and a host of family and friends. Preceding him in death, his parents: Gloria (Townsend) Burton, and James Hunt, one sister: Valerie Jean Townsend, and one brother: Fred Burton Jr., maternal grandparents: Martha and George B. Townsend and paternal grandparents, Samuel, and Annabell Hunt.
