South Bend — Lois Katherine VanPaemel, 91, passed away at 11:37 p.m. on Friday, November 24, 2006, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, from natural causes. Mrs. VanPaemel was born on April 11, 1915, in South Bend, to the late Harry and Oro (Kratzer) Barber. She has remained a lifelong resident. Mrs. VanPaemel retired in 1971 after 25 plus years as a private secretary. She was a member of the First Brethren Church of South Bend and the Women's Missionary Society of the church. Mrs. VanPaemel was also a member of the Monroe Mother's Chorus.

Mrs. VanPaemel is survived by a daughter, Patricia (J.R.) Penny of Edwardsburg, MI; a son, Keith (Diana) Barber of Whiteland, IN; a stepson, Jon VanPaemel of Twin Lake, MI; four grandchildren, Teri Kay (Dan) Spears of Indianapolis, Tracy (Brian) Shumaker of Indianapolis, Jay "Randy" Penny of Edwardsburg, MI, and Robyn (Jeff) Bressler of Elkhart; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bette LeMarr of South Bend.

Mrs. Van Paemel was preceded in death by three husbands, Zenith O. Barber, Donald Sickafoose, and John VanPaemel; and by a sister, Marjorie Fiedler.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2006, in First Brethren Church, 4909 S. Ironwood, South Bend. Rev. Larry Baker, pastor, will officiate. Private burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday in the church. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Contributions in memory of Lois K. VanPaemel may be donated to Luvability Ministries or the First Brethren Church, 4909 S. Ironwood, South Bend, IN 46614.
