SOUTH BEND - Robert E. Reiter, 91, of South Bend, passed away at 4:00 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2009, in Springhill Village, Terre Haute. He was born on August 20, 1918, in South Bend, IN, to the late Theodore and Anna Reiter. On September 14, 1946, in South Bend, IN, he married Cecilia K. (Miholick) Reiter, who preceded him in death on June 17, 2009.
Mr. Reiter is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Tom Hays of Terre Haute, IN; two grandchildren, Debbie (Todd) Norris of Terre Haute, IN, and Tom Hays of Palatine, IL; two great-grandchildren, Curtis Patrick and Michelle Patrick; sister-in-law, Helen Manuszak of South Bend, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
Sister, Dorothy VanTornhout, and two brothers, Benny Reiter and Ted Reiter, preceded him in death.
Mr. Reiter was a Riley High School graduate where he was senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society. He served his country honorably in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, serving four years in England as a staff sergeant.
Mr. Reiter was a 52-year member of St. Jude Catholic Church, a former member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of IBEW. He was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed reading, gardening and playing the piano.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road, South Bend. Rev. John Delaney will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, October 19th, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, where a Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. Contributions in memory of Robert E. Reiter may be made to St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road, South Bend, IN 46614; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
