Mary Jane (Baker) Haslett

October 22, 1920 – June 1, 2020

South Bend, IN– Mary Jane (Baker) Haslett, 99, passed peacefully, Monday afternoon, June 1, 2020 in the home of her daughter, with whom she lived since 2013.

Mary was introduced to her future husband, Keith Haslett, at a dinner party of friends. They began 67 years of marriage in July of 1942 at Broadway Evangelical Church in South Bend.

Preceding Mary were her parents, Helen (Goebel) Baker and Roland Baker; stepmother, Margaret (Williams) Baker; sister, Joan (Baker) Cunningham; son-in-law, Raymond Gurich and son, Phillip N. Haslett (dec. October 23, 2019.)

Surviving are her sister, Catherine “Tap” Minegar of Osceola; daughter, Karen Gurich of South Bend; grandson, Aaron (Reverie); great grandchildren, Melissa (Yosef), Ethan, Robert (Ashley); sister, Jenna; and great-great granddaughter, Ariana. Also surviving are daughter-in-law, Jackie Haslett of Geneva, IL; grandson, Phillip S. (Lana) and great-grandchildren, Parker and Payton Haslett, all of Geneva; granddaughter, Kimberlee (Andrew) Freedlund, and great-grandsons, Drew, William and Gus, all of Batavia, IL.

Known as the Baker Sisters Trio, Mary, Tap and Joan performed live on WSBT’s Lamplight Hour, accompanied by Harlan Hogan. With Keith as organist, Mary sang in Broadway’s choir. She also taught Sunday School and gave parental support to Youth Groups. Mary experienced a variety of jobs locally and retired from Dodge Manufacturing Corporation. She and Keith spent many years wintering in Venice, Florida where they made long-lasting friendships. She was a good seamstress, enjoyed crafting, walking, bowling, golf, games, creative poetry writing, travel and time spent with family.

Mary’s grandparents were among founders of the original South Bend Church that became the present day congregation of Broadway Christian Parish, United Methodist Church. Contributions given in Mary’s name to continue Broadway’s ministries will be a fitting memorial to mother and honor this heritage. Broadway Christian Parish, UMC, 1412 S. Carroll St. South Bend, IN 46613.

Our family greatly appreciates the faithful loving care provided to Mary this past year from Center for Hospice Care team members.
