STURGIS - Clarence E. "Co" Johnson, 87, of Sturgis, Mich., formerly of South Bend, passed away unexpectedly on July 29, 2008, in his home. He was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Toledo, Ohio, a son of the late John and Clara (Freitag) Johnson.

His family moved to South Bend in 1934, and he graduated from Riley High School in 1938. Clarence was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and The Korean Conflict, earning the rank of sergeant.

In 1957 he married Dorothy Mossholder of South Bend. She preceded him in death in 1983. In 1984 he married Patricia (Hamilton) Campbell in Sturgis. She preceded him in death in 1999. Clarence, a tool and die engineer, worked at Bendix until 1962.

He moved to Sturgis and was employed by Kirsch Company, retiring in 1982. He enjoyed building models, bowling and golfing.

Surviving are his daughter, Patricia (Tim) Bender of Kentwood, Mich.; a grandson, Jeff Bender of Kentwood; two stepsons, William (Phyllis) Campbell of Klinger Lake, Mich., and David Campbell of Bloomington, Ind.; and several step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Jo McCombs. Funeral services were held in Rosenberg Chapel, Sturgis, with full military honors, and interment was at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Lung Association.
