Emery A.Beres
March 29, 1918 – June 12, 2006
Emery A.Beres of Fountain Valley, Calif., died June 12, 2006, of natural causes.He was a former resident of Lake Arrowhead, Seal Beach and Leisure World.Born March 29, 1918, in South Bend, Indiana, he was 88 years old at his passing.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle I.Beres;a son, Dr. Brian N.Beres of Nipomo, CA; a stepdaughter, Sharon Wolcott;and stepsons, John Sawyer and Charles Woolery. He has five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Emery was a certified public accountant licensed in California, Indiana and Hawaii.He had a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, class of 1941, and an MBA degree from the University of Chicago as well as an MOC degree from Harvard University.He played varsity football at Notre Dame. He was a member of the California Society of CPAs, American Government Accountants Association and the American Legion.He served as president and director of the Mountains Humane Society, and as president of several chapters of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the poor. In addition to having a CPA practice in Lake Arrowhead. Emery also served as chief of the audit divisions of the Federal Aviation Administration in Los Angeles and in Honolulu.He also worked as an auditor with the U.S.General Accounting Office and as an accountant with Alexander Grant and Company.Emery was one of the original members of Crowe and Chizek, a CPA firm in South Bend, Indiana, and was also office manager and controller of Sibley Machine and Foundry of South Bend.
During World War II, Emery served his country as a lieutenant senior grade in the U.S. Navy.He participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima as the supply officer of a combat aircraft service unit. Emery Beres will be greatly missed by those who called him husband, dad and grandpa.
A funeral Mass will be held in Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fountain Valley on Monday, June 19, at 10 a.m., with an informal reception following. Arrangements are through Heritage Memorial Services (888) 848-2828.
