Helen Marie Lake
Helen Marie Lake, 71. of Pavillion Health Care Center in Valparalso, formerly of 1159 E. Fox St, died at 5 a.m. Saturday, Apr 1. 1989, in the Health Care Center. She was a retired teacher in the field of privale tutoring for 40 years in South Bend.
For 30 years she worked with Mrs. Marker's School, the Individual Training School, and in 1970 she opened her own studio in her home. In 1971, Miss Lake was named the Handicapped Professional Woman of the Year from District 15 Pilot International. She was born Sept. 17, 1916, in South Bend, and lived in the area all her life.
Surviving are four sisters, Caroline Goss of Dowagiac, Charlotte Esmay of Bristol, Wilma Jeanette Billie Wilson of Extred, N.Y, and Dorothy Jean Kerver of Houston; and a brother, Harold Thomas Lake of New Carlisie.
She graduated from Saint Mary's Coblege in 1909. Miss Lake was active in Paraplegia Association, was chairman of the Scholarship Fund, which was used toward education in occupational or physical therapy, and was a member of the American Association of University Women. She also was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Hollis-Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until services in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the church
