Kenneth Allan Lively

Aug. 9, 1947 - May 17, 2005

Kenneth Allan Lively, 57, of Hanover, MD, died May 17, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born August 9, 1947, in South Bend, Indiana, to George and Verna (Shupe) Lively, Ken graduated from Riley High School in 1965. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy. In 1969, he was married to Joan Humbert of Dwight, IL. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1976, with both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mathematics in 1977, and received his commission to officer. He later attended MIT, graduating with honors in 1984, with an ocean engineering degree in naval architecture and marine engineering, and an M.S. in electrical engineering and computer science. After serving 23 years in the Navy, he retired as a lieutenant commander in 1989. After retiring, Ken continued his work in engineering, most recently as vice president of the Power Systems Division at Syntek Technologies in Arlington, VA. He was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Aside from being a dedicated engineer, devoted husband, and loving father, Ken had a profound love for the water, and was a very avid boater. Most weekends he could be found somewhere exploring the various bays, rivers, and inlets of Chesapeake Bay with his wife, Joan, in their boat, the Lively Lady. When not on the water, Ken enjoyed a passion for bicycling, putting in countless hours and miles on the roads in and around Maryland and the Eastern Shore. He especially enjoyed riding with his two sons.

Surviving are his wife, Joan of Hanover, MD; his son, David and wife, Cristina of Danville, CA, along with their children, Michael and Katie; his son, Jeff and wife, Christina of Overland Park, KS, along with their son, Tyler; his daughter, Sherri Greene and husband, Derek of Shelby, NC, along with their children, Caroline, Ann-Marie, Hannah, Nathanael and Seth; his parents, George and Verna of Mishawaka, IN; his sister, Catharine Pollachek of Osceola, IN, along with her husband, Don, and her daughter, Molly; and his sister, Mary Pierce of Mishawaka, IN, along with her daughter, Christy.
