Catherine L. "Kitty" Heckber Sept. 23, 1926 - April 3, 2015 SOUTH BEND - Catherine "Kitty" Heckber, age 88, passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, April 3, 2015, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Kitty was born September 23, 1926, in South Bend, IN, to Harold and Agnes Zilky.

She was a 1944 graduate of Riley High School.

In 1951 she married the love of her life, Galen Heckber, who preceded her in death in 1996. Kitty was primarily a homemaker and was the heart and soul of her family. She loved planning "get-togethers" for birthdays, holidays, the yearly family reunions, or just any event that brought family or friends together. Everyone always had a good time because she loved life, loved having fun, and loved making others always feel welcome. Kitty was a special, sweet, funny, gentle, courageous and loving person, who will be missed by all who knew her.

Kitty is survived by her daughter, Deborah Heckber of South Bend, IN; her son, John (Joyce) Heckber of Ft Myers, FL; and four nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Jane Zilky.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the entire staff at the Center for Hospice Care for their compassion and help they gave Catherine and her family during her illness. The family would like to give a special thanks to her nurse Jenelle, and also to Trevor, Bob, her doctors and her bath aides.

Funeral services for Catherine will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 7th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Committal services and burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday in the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, Indiana 46545; or to Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of South Bend.
