Thomas was raised at Baltimore where his father was a traveling salesman. After his mother died, about 1890, he resided in the household of his cousin, John J. Pentz, at Baltimore. Thomas was the son of Thomas M. Pentz and Catherine C. “Kate” Mathews Pentz. Thomas married to Marjorie DeSaville Frazee on 17 May 1917 at Jackson, Michigan. They made their home at Jackson where he was first a jewelry store manager and later a real estate broker. They relocated to South Bend about 1932 where he was first a salesman and later a registrar for a correspondence school. He died at his home on West LaSalle Avenue after an illness of several months. Thomas and Marjorie were the parents of two children, June Frazee Pentz and Thomas Matthews Pentz.
