Albert Earl Tengelitsch Sr.

SOUTH BEND - Albert Tengelitsch Sr., 72, Oro Grande, NM, formerly of South Bend, IN, passed away Sunday in his son Mike's home after a battle with cancer. Albert was born 3/12/42 in South Bend, to Albert F. (preceded in death 1/23/06) & Eleanor (Gervais) Tengelitsch, surviving in South Bend. On 2/25/61 he married DeeEtta Mae Steinhagen (preceded him in death 3-5-2010). Surviving are 3 children: Albert E (Lisa Gant) Tengelitsch Jr., Elkhart, IN, Michael John (Kymberli Gough) Tengelitsch, Alamogordo, NM, Diane Sue Tengelitsch (longtime friend, Michael Zumwalt) Columbus, IN. He was preceded in death by his son, David James Tengelitsch 10-2-04 (fiancee, Kimberly Trowbridge) Mishawaka, & Dee's parents, John & Mavis (Guard) Steinhagen, Mishawaka. Also surviving are 3 siblings: Patricia A. (Revis A) Morton, Abingdon, VA, John J. (Betty Mccastlin-Meyers) Tengelitsch, Buchanon, MI, & Nancy Jean (William J) Foreman, South Bend; brother-in-law, Darrell Steinhagen, Mishawaka, IN; & sister-in-law, Jyll (Terry) Pollock, Niles, MI; 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; & many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews & cousins. He graduated from James Whitcomb Riley, South Bend, in 1960. He was mgr. of Woolworths, worked for John Hancock Ins., Schwans Ice Cream, & with Dee were owners of Oro Chico Café, Oro Grande, NM, for 20 years until retiring a few years ago. Al had wonderful reviews for his green chile cheeseburgers in several magazines & USA Today. Al & Dee were honorably mentioned as "Purveyors of wonderful meals & tales at the Oro Chico Café" in Scottie McNeish's (Dir. of the Andover Foundation for Archaeological Research) auto-biography. Al was also vice president of the Oro Grande Water Coop & Community Center & a member of the disbanded Oro Grande Chamber of Commerce. They previously lived in Glenn Ellyn & Chicago, IL, Three Rivers, MI, & across from the covered bridge, Centerville, MI. He was a great story teller, liked to prospect for gold, hunt for Native American artifacts, fish & play guitar. He touched a lot of lives, was loved by all his family & friends & will be dearly missed. There will be no visitation, but a memorial will be held in South Bend at a later date.
