William D. Koontz, 71, of Nadine Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away of natural causes on Friday, March 12, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mr. Koontz was born on August 12, 1927, to William "Fred" and Helen (Flattebo) Koontz in South Bend

On September 17, 1949, he married Betty Jones at the United Brethren Church in South Bend. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Bill (Peggy) Koontz of Osceola, Ind. and Randall Koontz of South Bend; two daughters, Phyllis (Michael) Powell of Osceola and Mariellen (John) Graf of South Bend; a sister, Josephine (William) Magee of Baton Rouge, La.; and by seven grandchildren, Jason and Holly Koontz, Gregory and Patricia Powell, and Joseph, Danielle, and Felicia Graf. Mr.

Koontz was a graduate of Riley High School in 1946, and worked for Wheelabrator Frye for 31 years as a Lab Technician and Plant Manager until retirement in 1986. Mr. Koontz served in the U.S. Army from 1946 until his Honorable discharge in 1948. He was a member of the American Legion Post 50 in South Bend, and Cedar Road Missionary Church, Osceola.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, with services conducted by Reverend Jim Larnard of the Cedar Road Missionary Church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home as well. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
