John Richard Watts

SOUTH BEND - John R. Watts, 79, residing in South Bend, passed away at 11:39 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka.
He was born February 7, 1937 in South Bend, a son of Ernest & Edith Edna (Williams) Watts, and has remained a lifelong resident of this community.
In October 1958, in South Bend, John was united in marriage to Carol L. Cook. Together, they have enjoyed 58 years of marriage. John is survived by his loving wife Carol, along with four daughters, Catherine Watts, M.D., of Carmel, IN; Christi (Bobby) Lough of North Richland Hills, TX; Barbara (Jeffrey) Goss of Garland, TX; and Sally (John) Cunningham of New Carlisle, IN; and a son, David (Tonya) Watts of Greenville, SC. He is also survived by his eleven grandchildren, Alisha, Christopher, Hayley, Alyssa, Lauren, Tyler, Kylie, Kaitlynn, Joel, Nathan, and Arielle, and one great-grandchild on the way, and his two brothers, Darrell (Joyce) Watts, and Michael Watts, both of South Bend. He was preceded in death by four grandchildren; his sister, Joan Eaton on June 3, 2015; and a nephew, Doug Watts, on June 8, 2015.
Mr. Watts was a self employed home builder and also crafted Custom Furniture and Cabinetry. He loved golf, Notre Dame Football and the Indianapolis Colts.
John never met a stranger. He loved his labradoodle Petunia “Tunie.” He was very tenderhearted, and most of all, loved being “Papa” to his grandchildren.
Services honoring the life of John Watts will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 10, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend. Rev. David Wetterlund will officiate. Graveside services and military honors will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. Sunday, and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
