SOUTH BEND - Alice “Lucy” Martinez, 56, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Sunday, August 6, 2017 at her home in South Bend, IN.

Lucy was born on March 13, 1961 to Harry E. Ort (Vandalia, MI) and Pearlene (Melton Ort) Johnson (deceased 2013) in Mishawaka, IN.

Lucy graduated a year early from Riley High School, South Bend, IN, in 1978. She then attended Bethel College until 1979.

Lucy married Jeffrey Manley (deceased 2010) on October 6, 1979. She gave birth to Shilah Diane (Manley) Semple (Osceola, IN) on October 8, 1980 and Isaiah Abraham Manley (deceased 1987) on March 16, 1982. Lucy was divorced and then married Alfred “Marty” Martinez (Deceased 2013) of South Bend, IN on November 18, 2010.

Lucy has 3 grandchildren by Shilah: Tyler Daniel Semple (2001), Gage Ian Semple (2003), and Ashton Connor Brewer (2009) (Osceola & South Bend, IN). Daniel P. Semple, South Bend, IN, is the father of Tyler and Gage, Dustin C. Brewer, South Bend, IN, is the father of Ashton. Lucy also has an older sister, Janet E. (Ort) Hanson (1956) of South Bend, IN.

Lucy avidly volunteered her time and gave whatever she could to local churches and charities. She was notorious for bringing food and supplies to ones she saw in need no matter the challenges ahead. Lucy spent years as the “Gravy Master” for The Turkey Supper at Monson Community Church in South Bend, IN. Lucy was always making plans to get involved in aiding others and to bring vibrant energy into people's lives.

Lucy spent a lot of time focusing on and being with her daughter and grandchildren who she said were her whole world! Lucy had a green thumb and admired her flowers and garden. She loved to watch beauty in nature come to life which pushed her to write poetry and create beautiful art. She was always decorating to celebrate the next life event to make things more special!

Lucy's Celebration of Life Service is being held at Monson Community Church by Pam Paluszewski located at 24179 St. Rd. 2, South Bend, IN 46619 on August 14, 2017 at 11am (EST).

Memorial contributions in honor of Lucy may be made to the family in the care of Hanley & Sons Funeral Home, 23421 St. Rd. 23, South Bend, IN 46614.
