After graduation, Richard went to Ft. Benjamin Harrison for the Army. After graduating, he was sent to Great Lakes Naval Academy where he became a Naval Pilot Cadet during the Second World War. Later, he studied at the University of New Mexico. Richard enlisted in the Air Force in 1949 and served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the Air Force in 1967 as a Chief Master Sergeant.
