Mt. Pleasant - Geraldine Ellen Malia of Mount Pleasant, SC died Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Franke at Seaside in Mount Pleasant. She was 91. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service and inurnment ceremony at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 950 Darrell Creek Trail, Mount Pleasant, SC on February 4, 2017 at 11:00am. "Gerry" was born February 4, 1925 in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Richard B. and Jeannette Verhoestra Malia. She graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in South Bend and the South Bend College of Commerce. Her career as an executive secretary spanned over more than 60 years, including 41 years with Gould Paper Corporation in New York City, culminating with her retirement at the age of 85 in 2010. Throughout her life, Gerry was very career-focused - often working long hours. She also cherished her family and remained devout in her Catholic faith. In her spare time, she was an avid reader. She is survived by her brother, Richard "Butch" Malia and sister-in-law, Terry Merrell Malia of Mount Pleasant, SC and 25 nieces and nephews, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Joan Marie Dobrotka, Mary Louise Smith, Alice Ruth Cirillo and Patricia Kathleen Malia; brother, James Joseph Malia; nephew, Michael Joseph Dobrotka; nieces, Jennifer Malia Stricklin and Anne Marie Cirillo.
