SOUTH BEND - Lester F. Haenes, 89, residing on 31st Street in River Park, South Bend, died at 10:11 PM Monday, May 14, 2007, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was born October 5, 1917, in South Bend, IN, to Harold and Eva Haenes, and had lived in South Bend most all of his life.

On September 4, 1937, in South Bend, IN, he married Henrietta B. Williams. Mr. Haenes is survived by his wife of 69 years, Henrietta Haenes; two sons, Bruce H. Haenes of South Bend and John R. Haenes of Ft. Worth, TX; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Dorothy (Fred) Nieter of Warsaw, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles I. Haenes; and two sisters, Edith Cofield and Rosemary Haenes. Mr. Haenes retired in 1968 from Haenes Screen Process, Inc., where he was the president and owner.

Les was a 1937 graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School where he played varsity football for three years and ran track. He loved to hunt and fish, and was a longtime member of the Calvert Rod and Gun Club. He raised registered Beagle Hounds and ran field trials all over the country. He is the first and only member of the St. Joseph Valley and Michiana Beagle Clubs to make a field champion.

Mr. Haenes was a member of First Brethren Church, South Bend. He was a 40-year member of South Bend Lodge #294, F.&AM., which is now St. Joseph Lodge #45 F.&AM., Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, and was past chaplain of the former Avalon Grotto.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, May 18, 2007, in the First Brethren Church, 4909 South Ironwood Drive, South Bend. Rev. Larry Baker, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Friends may call from 5 to 8 PM today in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, where a Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:30 PM. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services on Friday in the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Les Haenes may be made to the First Brethren Church Building Fund or to a charity of donor's choice.
