Maverick Edward Ruiz

Maverick Edward Ruiz, 40 years old, passed away at 4:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Hospice House, South Bend.  Maverick was born on December 13, 1975 in El Paso, TX to Eddie and Diana Dolores (Huerta) Ruiz.  His mother, Diana, preceded him in death on August 29, 2013.  Maverick has lived in South Bend for the past 36 years.

Maverick is survived by his son, Devin Edward Ruiz of South Bend; daughter, Genesis Esther Ruiz of South Bend; father, Eddie Ruiz of South Bend; and two sisters, Courtney Nancy Ritter of Ashville, NC and Rachel Tara Ruiz of South Bend.

Maverick attended Riley High School and earned a scholarship to play baseball at Spoon River College in Canton, IL. He received his Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs at Indiana University. Maverick worked at United Conveyor Company where he served as the UAW Local 5 Financial Secretary and eventually becoming one of the nation’s youngest unit chairmen.  He was proud to have led labor negotiations while at United Conveyor and delivered the highest ratifications in the company’s history. He then worked at Allied Medical Physicians where he was honored as the recipient of the rookie of the year award among other distinctions. Maverick’s spirit of entrepreneurship led him to establish Five Star Renovations, LLC. 

Maverick will be remembered for his passion, fearlessness, loyalty, and occasional stubbornness.  He actively supported both local and national Democratic candidates through fundraising and canvassing.  His many hobbies include golf, good food, hearty debates and meaningful conversation. 

Friends may visit with Maverick’s family to celebrate his life at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the UAW Local 5, 1426 S. Main Street, South Bend, IN.  Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend, is assisting with funeral arrangements. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Maverick Edward Ruiz may be donated to any Lake City Bank where a trust has been established to help care for his daughter, Genesis Ruiz.  Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
