April 22, 1921 - April 17, 2007
SOUTH BEND - Homer E. Morris, 85, passed away at 10:08 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2007, in St. Paul's Retirement Community, South Bend. He was born on April 22, 1921, in Summitville, IN, to Emmett and Nellie (Maddy) Morris.

On March 13, 1947, in Muncie, IN, he married the former Mary Catherine Cross. Mr. Morris is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Catherine Morris; a daughter, Emily M. Papai of Edwardsburg, MI; a son, Matthew E. Morris of Grass Valley, CA; a grandson, Andrew O. (Brandy) Morris of Grass Valley, CA; and a great-grandson, Emmett O. Morris of Grass Valley, CA.

Mr. Morris was preceded in death by five sisters, Inez Reiley, Phyllis Jester, Jessie Dunham, Mary Bailey and Juanita Vance; and by two brothers, Gerald and Jack Morris. Mr. Morris was honorably discharged in 1949 after serving his country in the United States Army. He graduated from Ball State University with a B.S. and M.A. degrees in education.

Mr. Morris retired in 1985 from the South Bend Community School Corporation as an industrial arts teacher at Riley High School. Prior to Riley, he taught at Harrison and Oliver Schools. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was in charge of the acolytes. Mr. Morris volunteered in the soup kitchen and for the Budget Corner, both ministries of the church. He was also a member of American Legion Post 303. Mr. Morris was a self-taught craftsman of the building arts, remodeling and building his own home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2007, in the First United Methodist Church, 333 S. Main St., South Bend, IN. Rev. Dan Berger will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, April 20, 2007, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN, and one hour prior to the services in church. Contributions in memory of Homer E. Morris may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
