Frank "Augie" August, 84, of Battle Creek, Michigan died January 14, 2005 at home.

He was born March 31, 1920 in South Bend to Gusztav and Terez (Papal) Szokolics. He attended Our Lady School and graduated from Riley High School in 1938.

In 1965 Frank married Beverly Louise Turpin. She died in 1995. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Alex, Joseph and Gustav; and sisters, Theresa Bodnar and Clara Burnowski.

He is survived by daughters, Aimee (Shane) McClung, Danielle (Jeff) Oberlin, both of Battle Creek and Jay Ann (Tony) Troilo of Huntington Beach, California; son, Brady August of South Bend; four granddaughters, Lauri, Tara, Holly and Faith; sisters Bertha Kluszynski and Marie Wiseman, both of South Bend.

Frank served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. While in the service he attended the University of Iowa, Murray State, Wisconsin and Purdue Universities. In 1948 he completed his studies and graduated from Indiana University.

After high school he won the Bendix Novice Boxing Championship and the South Bend Golden Gloves Boxing bantam and featherweight divisions. He advanced to the quarter finals of the Tournament of Champions in Chicago. He also was a member of the University of Iowa Seahawks boxing team while in the Naval Air Corps.

Frank was employed in various management positions at the Studebaker Corporation for 20 years. He also spent a year at Bendix Products Division prior to joining Clark Equipment Company in Corporate Long Range Planning in Buchanan. He was promoted to Manager of Marketing Planning in Battle Creek until his retirement. After retirement he joined Progressive Dynamics in Marshall as New Product Development Sales Manager in 1976. In 1982 he worked for several marketing research firms in Grand Rapids and Elkhart, Indiana. In 1986 he formed his own marketing and consulting business with emphasis on new business development, competitive intelligence and marketing research. He conducted marketing intelligence studies as an independent consultant in the United States, Scotland and Ireland until his retirement.

Frank was a former President of the American Marketing Association, Michiana Chapter, and a former board member of the West Michigan Chapter. He was a former president of the Studebaker Management Club, President of the Battle Creek Jazz Ensemble, a member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, and was active in the United Way in South Bend.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Church Parish Council and a former Eucharistic Minister. He was active in fund raising for the Kalamazoo Diocesan Services Appeal and the Battle Creek Area Catholic Schools Foundation fund drives. He served on the steering committee of the Together in Faith Campaign and other church fund drives.

Frank was a life-long member of the YMCA in both South Bend and Battle Creek, and an avid handball player, runner and skier. As a Notre Dame football fan and season ticket holder for 37 years he rarely missed a home game. A dedicated live jazz aficionado he enjoyed reading, dancing and parties on his boat on Goguac Lake. He especially enjoyed writing poetry for his late wife, children and grandchildren.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek where family will be present from 2 until 4:00 p.m. and 6 until 8:00 p.m. and where a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Battle Creek. Interment, Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan. Memorials may go to American Cancer Society or Good Samaritan Hospice Care.

The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek.
