Sandra L. (Raugh) Boehm
Oct. 18, 1935 - March 5, 2012 SOUTH BEND - Sandra "Sandy" L. Boehm, 76, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2012, in the Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center, South Bend. She was born on October 18, 1935, in Mishawaka, IN, to Carl and Ida (Hicks) Raugh. Mrs. Boehm is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bernard A. "Sonny" Boehm; two nieces, Betty Tihey and Christine Pollock; three nephews, Bill VanSkyhock, Denny Boehm and Danny Boehm; sister-in-law, Barbara VanSkyhock of Phoenix, AZ; and brother-in-law, Harold (Pat) Boehm of South Bend, IN.
She was preceded in death by her only child, Carl Boehm, and by a nephew, Robert VanSkyhock.
Sandy and Sonny met as teenagers quite by accident roller skating at Playland Park. When Sonny fell trying to do a spread eagle, Sandy fell over him and their skates locked. After he apologized, they started skating together, dating, and eloped on October 13, 1953, in Cassopolis, MI.
Sandy was a graduate of Riley High School and worked in the deli at Kroger's for six years in the 1970s. They lived in Georgia and Texas during the time Sonny served in the United States Army. She learned to ride horses as a child and later taught her husband to ride. They rode motorcycles together, and enjoyed going up and down the St. Joseph River in their speed boat. Sandy enjoyed vacationing with her husband, and they would travel to many cities where they flew model airplanes in contests. She and her husband enjoyed sports and bowled on a mixed league.
There will be no funeral service. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. The family will receive friends from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2012, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN.
