Robert Giles Obituary

April 27, 1936 - June 9, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Robert L. Giles, 77, of South Bend, passed away Sunday evening surrounded by his loving family and listening to cherished songs. Robert was born in South Bend to Marie (Smith) Kollar and Sam Giles.

He graduated from Riley High School and enlisted in the Marines when he was eighteen.

Vocationally he was a jack of all trades -- from driving semi trucks, owning a gas station, selling insurance -- and ended his career as a service manager for the RV industry.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; seven of his ten siblings: Karl, Gene, Earl, Georgia Ann, Virginia, Jennie and Glen; as well as his furry friend, Wally.

On January 21, 1978, he married the love of his life, Sharon (Lyon), who survives. The pieces of his heart that still remain are his three children: Raymond Lyon, Amy Giles (Scott Krueger) and Dawn Lovitt (David); six grandchildren: Lauren Martin (Casey), Breanna Giles, Bridget Rogers, Kimberlee Giles, Paige Lovitt and Kira Krueger; and the littlest pieces of his heart were his great-granddaughters, McKenzie and Kylie. His brothers, John and Jim, his sister, Marsha, and many loving nieces and nephews and friends who were like relatives survive.

His final pleasures were watching old westerns and reading books. Before his illness he enjoyed singing Karaoke and family games such as horseshoes and playing cards, especially euchre and poker - always dropping pennies on the floor for the little ones to "find." The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Rivercrest for the great care and kindness they shared with Robert and the family.

A huge thank you to Mike Tirotta and the staff at Bubb Funeral Chapel for their support, kindness and generosity. Pastor Mark Waltz will preside over a memorial service that will be held in the Great Room at Granger Community Church on Friday, June 14, 2013, at 3:30 pm with a potluck gathering directly following. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements. "He was a brave warrior. A generous soul, that cared for others. Though he was old, he was still a warrior. He fought his final battle, and won. So he went to heaven, proud, like a warrior should."
