SOUTH BEND - Joyce A. Kerns, 80, residing in South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 5:55 AM Friday, July 20, 2012, at her daughter's home in South Bend. Joyce was born on March 27, 1932, in Mishawaka, to the late Verlie and Amy (Richardson) Reeves. She was one of eight children born into the family and has been a lifelong resident of the Michiana area. On June 29, 1952, in South Bend, she was united in marriage to Harold R. Kerns, who survives. Joyce was a homemaker and enjoyed her time working for Claeys Old Fashioned Candy, South Bend.

She attended Riley High School, and loved volunteering at the Potawatomi Zoo and for the Civil Defense.

She was a member of the River Park United Methodist Church, South Bend, enjoyed sewing, knitting, painting ceramics, and traveling to visit with family and friends.

Joyce was preceded in death by her son, Terry Lee Kerns; her son-in-law, Kevin DeCocker; and her brothers and sisters.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Harold Kerns. They were married for 60 years. She is also survived by her daughters, Della Ann (Richard) Elkins and Sally K. DeCocker, both of South Bend; 5 grandchildren, Jason Kerns, Richard J. (Trish) Elkins, Michael L. Elkins (Sascha), Zachury and Krystal; 12 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Angela, Dylan, Bailey, Cierra, Erick, Caitlin, Savanna, Skia, Ailey, Terry and Sapphire; 3 step-great-grandchildren, Stephine, Josh and Norman; and 1 great-great-granddaughter, Isebella.

Memorial services for Joyce A. Kerns will be 12:00 PM Saturday, August 11, 2012, at the River Park United Methodist Church, located at 920 S. 23rd Street, South Bend, IN 46615. Pastor Thomas Thews will officiate. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to River Park United Methodist Church.
