MISHAWAKA - Richard A. "Rick" McCune, 58, residing in Mishawaka, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Hospice House, South Bend. Rick was stricken with Guillian Barre Syndrome in November of 2012 and fought a long and courageous battle. He was born March 16, 1956 in South Bend to Jack M. & Betty (Hathaway) McCune, and has been a lifelong resident of this area.

On October 8, 1988 in Mishawaka, Rick was united in marriage to Lori A. Spitaels. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Lori, along with his mother, Betty J. Hathaway McCune, and his sister, Susan K. McCune, both of South Bend.

Although Rick did not have children of his own, he loved all his nieces and nephews, Tyler, Ashley, Payton and Elly Clark and Nicole Spitaels, as his own. He also leaves behind his beloved cats, Riley and Shelby. Rick was preceded in death by his father, Jack M. McCune in 1993, and his brother, Gary Lee McCune in 1979.

He graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School.

He worked for 30 years at South Bend Form Tool as a truck driver. He also worked for Mishawaka City Hall as a night janitor. He was a longtime member of the former Ridgedale Presbyterian Church. Rick was known for his smile, laughter, joking around and for wearing his unique purple tennis shoes in his younger years. His favorite Disney character was Goofy and he loved Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks. Rick did not know a stranger; he was truly a gentle and kind person who was loved by all. He loved his sports, especially Notre Dame football and women's basketball. Rick loved many bands but his favorite was Queen and his favorite song was Bohemian Rhapsody. He loved his family and friends, working in his garden, camping, vacations and he loved his food, especially corn on the cob and breakfast. He was famous for his Rick McMuffins. He had many nicknames: Hippie, Ricky Mouse, The Rickmeister, The Rickster and Bubba.

Rick's family and friends would like to thank Kindred Hospital in Mishawaka for the wonderful care he received from the nursing, wound care and respiratory staff and also Hospice in Roseland for the wonderful care and support they provided for Rick, his family and friends during his stay there.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 2, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Don Neely will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy on behalf of Rick McCune may be offered to the Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545, or St. Joseph County Humane Society, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Diane Ayer (Davis) (1974)
