George Charles VanGoey

George Charles VanGoey died in the company of his family at the Dujarie House, Notre Dame, Indiana on Saturday, August 17, 2013. George was born in South Bend, Indiana to Karel L. and Alphonsine Jean Felix VanGoey on December 25, 1927. George graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School.

He then joined the U.S. Navy and served in both World War II and the Korean conflict. Following his service in the Navy, George worked for the Studebaker Corporation and later the Bendix Corporation (now Honeywell) as a member of the security force and as an EMT until his retirement in 1990.

On November 5, 1949, George married Suzanne Mary Sulier in Erie, Michigan George is survived by his wife of 63 years and his seven children, Michael, James (Michelle), Dennis, David, Thomas and Carol of South Bend and Robert of Mishawaka. George is also survived by a sister, Georgette Harding and grandchildren Jason and Jeffrey VanGoey of California, Jennifer VanGoey of Austin, Texas, Joshua VanGoey of Indianapolis, Andrew VanGoey of Mishawaka, Amy VanGoey of Portland, Oregan, Tiffany and Jacob VanGoey of Cincinnati, Ohio and Abigail, Jordan, Paige, Maxwell, Samuel VanGoey and Jonathan Cole of South Bend. He is also survived by his two great-granddaughters and his sister-in-law, Barbara VanGoey.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, John VanGoey and a granddaughter, Sarah VanGoey.

George was a family man who enjoyed backyard barbecues and the company of family and friends. He was a dedicated member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society at Holy Cross Church, a life-time member of the BK Club, member of the Holy Cross Ushers, The Knights of Columbus, and former Scoutmaster of Troop 437. He loved to travel, taking many trips and cruises after his retirement.

Friends may call on Friday, August 23 from 2-8 with a rosary at 7 p.m. at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 Bendix Drive, South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, August 24th, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church with Msgr. William Schooler officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, Indiana.
