Vernon Orville Bachtel

Jun. 13, 1896 – Feb. 18, 1975

 

Vernon O. Bachtel, 78, of 1202 Sunnymede, died at 7 a.m. today in Walker Memorial Hospital, Avon Park, Fla., where he had been spending the winter.

Bachtel was a teacher at Riley and Central High Schools for 41 years. Born on June 13, 1896, in Lakeville, he had lived here all his life. His widow, Edith, whom he married on Aug. 19, 1918, in Covington, Ky., survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Murrmann of South Bend, Mrs. Mary Blakeman of Springfield, Mass., and Mrs. Dora Mathisen of Chatham, N.J.; 17 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a brother, John of Lakeville, and a sister, Mrs. Eunice Russell of South Bend.

A graduate of Bowling Green University and the University of Notre Dame, Bachtel held an M.A. degree from Indiana University.

The Forest G. Hay and Son Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood, is in charge of arrangements. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church, of which he was a member for 50 years. Rev. Robert A. Curtis, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Southlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Forrest G. Hay and Son Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood.
