SOUTH BEND – Charles L. Stewart, 91, of Montrose Drive, South Bend, passed away at 4:55 a.m. Friday May 25, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mr. Stewart was born on March 8, 1910, in Fountain County, Ind., and resided in South Bend since 1934 coming from Attica, Ind.

On September 11, 1935, in South Bend he married the former Margaret E. Cook who preceded him in death on March 6, 1998.

Mr. Stewart is survived by a daughter, Sharon A. (Melvin) Matthews of Beaverton, Oregon. Also surviving are two grandsons, Craig K. (Christine) Jarrett of Portland, Oregon and Jeff N. (Melissa) Jarrett of Corvallis, Oregon, four great-grandchildren, Payton, Dylan, Mollie and Kevin Jarrett.

Mr. Stewart retired from the teaching profession after 40 years with the South Bend School District. He was graduate of Attica High School and a graduate of Purdue University receiving  BA and MS degrees.

Mr. Stewart was a teacher and coach at Central High School and Riley High School. He was an organizer and secretary for two men’s bowling leagues for over 30 years. He was an organizer and coach of the Junior bowling group at Riley High School for over 15 years.

Mr. Stewart was an assistant to coach John Wooden in basketball at Central High School and also an assistant to Bob Primmer at Central High School.

Mr. Stewart coached tennis, golf, and baseball at South Bend Central as well. He was the head coach of basketball at Riley High School. He was a member of Southlawn United Methodist Church and was a member of the South Bend Bowling Hall of Fame.

Visitation hours for Charles L. Stewart will be on Friday, June 1, from 9 to 11 a.m at the Hanley & Sons “Southwest Chapel” Funeral Home located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1 in the funeral home with Pastor Craig Clapper of Trinity Evangelical Free Church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, make all memorials to: St. joseph County Cancer Society, St. Joseph County Diabetes Society or to the St. Joseph County Heart Assosciation.

The Hanley & Sons ”Southwest Chapel” Funeral Home is handling arrangements and services and extends deepest sympathy and prayers to the family.
