Richard Keith Harris

SOUTH BEND — Richard Keith Harris, 73, residing in South Bend, passed away at 7:00 p.m.Sunday, January 7, 2007, in his home following an illness. He was born November 7, 1933, in Danville, IL, as the son of Otto and Hatie B. (Oglesby) Harris, and had lived in South Bend since 1946. He graduated in 1952 from James Whitcomb Riley High School, and later entered the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, enlisting June 8, 1954, and was honorably discharged on May 4, 1956.
In 1957, in Lakeville, he married Joyce Marie Wallace.They enjoyed 49 years together until her passing this past October 4, 2006.He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Sally Bussman, Gertrude Hanson and Virginia Stevens, and two brothers, Eddie and John Harris.
Mr.Harris is survived by his three loving children, Linda Rockhill of South Bend, Debra (Larry) Williams of Auburn, IN, and Todd Harris of South Bend. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Craig, Megan and Stephanie Swift, and Sarah Williams; a sister, Wilma Werner of St.Petersburg, FL; and two brothers, Frank Harris of South Bend and Phillip Harris of Spanish Fort, AL.
Mr.Harris retired as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service in December 1988 following 33 years of faithful service.He was a member of Southlawn United Methodist Church, joined Lakeville Lodge #353, F.&AM in 1974, and served as Worshipful Master in 1979.He was a former member of First Christian Church of South Bend where he served as a deacon and an elder.
Public graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 11, at Southlawn Cemetery, 61300 U.S.31 South, South Bend. Rev.Ron Dixon will officiate. There will be a private visitation for the family on Wednesday at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel.
