Elden “Blackie” Motts
September 16, 1932 ~ August 7, 2024 91 Years Old
Elden “Blackie” Motts, 91, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2024 in his residence.
Elden was born on September 16, 1932 in South Bend to Earl and Hildegarde (Alfowski) Motts. On January 18, 1958 he married the former Joan Cooper. She preceded him in death along with three sisters Elda Mary Skelton, Irene Motts, and Helen Bronsing, and two brothers Paul Motts and his twin Earl Motts.
Surviving are a daughter Glenna (Randy) Smith, a son Craig (Shelley) Motts. 6 grandchildren Aaron (Alicia) Smith, Jason (Sophia) Smith, Jason Fletcher, Bryan (Kelly) Fletcher, Michael (Brooke) Fletcher and Daniel Fletcher, 10 great-grandchildren Emi, Noah, Carly, Tyler, Samantha, Hope, Jaxon, Maddox, Faith, and Audrey, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Blackie graduated from Riley High School in 1952 where he received the Most Valuable Running Back Award in 1949. In 1950 the South Bend Tribune named him the Most Valuable Player (East Division) as well as All-Conference. Blackie received these honors three times. He was Riley’s highest scorer with 31 touchdowns.
Elden worked for RACO for 43 years and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion 284 and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son.
Viewing will take place on Monday, August 12, 2024 from 11:00am to 1:00pm in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. Funeral services will follow with burial in Southlawn Cemetery.
