Robert Gene Taylor, 90, of Elkhart, Indiana passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
Bob was born on November 24, 1933, in LaPorte, Indiana, to the late John Alvin and Grace Helen (Foresman) Taylor.
Bob graduated from Riley High School in 1952 where he played basketball. He then graduated from Ball State University in 1956 where he played football. He also received his Master's degree from Notre Dame University.
Bob retired from Riley High School after teaching for 40 years in the South Bend Community Schools. He was inducted into the Riley High School Hall of Fame in 1998. He then went on to serve as adjunct professor at Indiana University at South Bend. At IUSB he taught Introduction to Public Affairs and was twice voted Outstanding Adjunct Professor.
Bob also served the 5th District, 4 terms, 16 years, as the only Republican on the Democratic South Bend City Council.
He enjoyed his family, sports, travel, politics and public affairs.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 49 years, Unafay (Handlin) Taylor, two sons, John Edward Taylor, Timothy Taylor, and a brother, Carl Taylor.
He is survived by his present wife Nancy (Van Loo) Taylor, his son Matthew A. Taylor of South Bend and children by marriage Lisa A. Phelps, Erik (Kim) Phelps, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren, daughter in law’s Cara Taylor, Janie Mae Taylor and a sister-in-law Rosemary Taylor and many friends.
The family will receive friends at Chapel Hill Funeral Home on Saturday, October 26th, 2024, from 2:00 PM till 5:00 PM.
Committal services will be private.
The family would like to thank Elara Caring Hospice Care, especially Shayla for the outstanding care given to Mr. Taylor.
