Eugene R. Cserpes

NEW CARLISLE — Eugene “Gene” R. Cserpes, 81, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2011, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Eugene was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1929, in South Bend, to the late Frank J. and Bernice A. Cserpes. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Eugene R. Cserpes Jr.and Terry E. Cserpes; and by his sister, Marlene.
He is survived by his dear friend, Virginia S. Moore. He attended St. Matthews Catholic Church School to finish the 8th grade, then went on to 9th grade to Abraham Lincoln School, and then graduated from James Whitcomb Riley in 1949.
He honorably served his country in the United States Navy for eight years. He then settled on a small farm SE of New Carlisle, IN. He worked for the Studebaker Corp.and then was an agent for Standard Oil Co. He later became self-employed at B&B Auto Glass Co.He loved dearly the outdoors and all that went with it. He purchased a small private camp in the bush country of Canada.
Eugene retired in 1983 to then pursue his lifelong dream associated with the outdoors, working at crafting of leather and fur. Gene is well-known throughout the area as the leather man at the Farmers Market in South Bend. He displayed and sold his work for over 40 years at booth #43. He loved and appreciated all his loyal friends and customers.
Eugene was a member in good standing with Fraternal Order of #2083 Mishawaka, Loyal Order of Moose #981 Michigan City, American Legion #357, National Rifle Assn., National Trappers Assn., Saugany Lake Conversation Club, Rolling Prairie.Gene loved to play the maracas to Latin music and played polka music with his accordion with many bands throughout the mid-west.Gene and Virginia’s dancing would liven up the evening, and take home the honorable mention.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. today, June 2, 2011, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME
