In Memory
Betty J. Hoida
June 20, 1931 ~ January 6, 2025
Betty J. Hoida, 93, a lifelong resident of South Bend passed away peacefully on Monday January 6, 2025, at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross in South Bend.
Betty was born on June 20, 1931, in South Bend to Frederick Hoida and Rose (Hoyara) Hoida. Betty’s father died when she was 10, and after her mother remarried, she gained a stepfather; Stephen Lemanski, who was a significant role model in her life.
Betty married Gerald L. Tesch on June 30, 1950, sharing 12 years of marriage and 4 children. After their divorce, Betty proved her strength and hard work ethic, by raising 4 children and setting an example of what a strong, capable woman could do.
During her earlier years Betty worked for Associates as a Secretary. She retired in 2006 from Memorial Health Systems after working in the School of Radiology and Admitting. After her retirement she continued to work in bookkeeping with Real Services. During a period of time when she worked at Edward’s Iron Works, she assisted the top salesman of the company in the entertainment of clients at her home. She prepared new appetizer recipes for them and joined them at Notre Dame Football games. She was a true ND fan giving a big smile when she heard of their recent Sugar Bowl win! She loved to work outside in her yard and care for her garden. She enjoyed taking her grand- children to Silver Beach and camping at Tower Hill. She also made frequent trips to Ft. Wayne to enjoy time with her grandchildren there. Many fond memories were made during those trips. She loved having her grandchildren over on the weekends for board games, baking, and cooking - a trait she was very skilled at and lovingly passed on to a few of the grandkids. Chop Suey was one of her specialties. She was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral Parish.
Betty is survived by her children; Deborah (Charles) McNagny, Janine (Larry Joe) Wood, and Lisa (Restituto Loran, Jr.) Tesch. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Her sister, Frances Lemanski also survives.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; Frederick Hoida and Rose Lemanski, her stepfather; Stephen Lemanski, her son; Kevin Tesch, and her siblings; Helen Milner, Robert Hoida, and Eugene Hoida.
