SOUTH BEND - Helen L. Strong, 83, of South Bend, passed away at 9:05 a.m. Thursday, July 29th, in Regency Place of South Bend after an extended illness. Mrs. Strong was born on January 15, 1927, in South Bend, IN, and had resided in the area her lifetime.

On May 23, 1947, in South Bend, as Helen L. Smith, she married Robert T. Strong, who passed away on July 29, 2009. Mrs. Strong was preceded in death by her loving husband; her parents, William A. and Harryetta L. (Barnes) Smith; and two sisters, Peggy Springer and Della K. Davis. Also by a brother, Arthur Smith

Helen is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Daniel A. (Carolyn) Strong of South Bend; and two grandchildren, Tiffany R. Strong and Douglas A. Strong; and a great-grandson, Hunter, all of whom she loved and cherished. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, and a sister, Ruby O. (Cliff) Daniels of South Bend.

Helen will be dearly missed by her loving family, her church family and all who had the opportunity to know this wonderful lady. She retired from Sears and Roebuck Company after 45 years of service. She worked in the auditing dept. Helen loved gardening, her flowers, dining out and being with family.

The family request in lieu of flowers: PLEASE make all memorial contributions to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Mrs. Strong was a member of the Community Baptist Church for many years, loved her church and was a faithful servant of the Lord. Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 2nd, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 3rd, in the funeral home, with Rev. Steve Stadtmiller officiating. Burial to follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The HANLEY & SONS "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and services and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Strong family.
