In Memory
Marquerite (McCuen) Hutchinson Monroe
Marguerite McCuen Hutchinson Monroe passed into the arms of her loving Saviour on July 12, 2018, lucid, acceptant and laughing through her last days.
She was born on March 31, 1924, the ninth of ten children, to Harold Olin and Bernice Oresta (Miller) McCuen. Eight of her siblings have predeceased her, leaving only the youngest, Esther Lois Michels. For the last seven years they lived just several doors from each other, at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's in South Bend, Indiana, and had a close relationship. Marguerite had moved to Drew's Place, an assisted living facility, in Coldwater, Michigan seven weeks prior to her death.
In May, 1943, she took a train from South Bend to San Diego, where on June 1, she married her first love, John Earl ("Jack") Hutchinson, who left a week later as a Marine headed for the South Pacific. She lived in San Diego until his discharge following 19 months in the hospital recovering from a war wound. Thereafter, and the rest of her life, she lived in South Bend.
They raised four children, who survive: Robert Lee (Nancy) Hutchinson, of Tarpon Springs Florida and Asheville, North Carolina; John David (Maureen) Hutchinson, of Coldwater, Michigan; Pamela Sue (Loren) Gray of Surprise, Arizona, and J. Scott Hutchinson of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by her Granddaughter, Kira Colleen Hutchinson (Kevin Beale) and Great Granddaughters, Leda Skye Beale and Iris Jane Beale, of Louisville; and by her Grandson, John Haas (Sabina) Hutchinson, and Great Grandchildren, Sarah Kumar Hutchinson and John Arthur Hutchinson, of Cincinnati. She was predeceased by her Granddaughter, Rosemary Maureen Hutchinson, in 2016.
She was married for 30 years to Jack Hutchinson, 3 years to Clarence G. Snyder, and 12 years to Burdette N. Monroe, all of whom are deceased.
Marguerite loved her work as a free-lance court reporter in South Bend from 1958 to 1978. She was the first Indiana court reporter to receive the Certificate of Merit from the National Court Reporters Association, for taking testimony at 280 words per minute. She founded an antique doll club in 1986, Yesterday's Children of Michiana, where she made good friends and enjoyed as a hobby and business collecting and dealing in antique dolls at a booth in the Michigan Antique Mall in Niles, Michigan.
Marguerite was a member of Trinity Free Evangelical Church in South Bend, and a long-time member of Phi Beta Psi sorority. She enjoyed her life to the fullest and said that if she were to live all over again she would probably do the same things. She loved life.
Private services will be held at a later date in Surprise, Arizona, the home of her only daughter. Memorials may be sent to Camp Ray Bird, P.O. Box 3717, South Bend, Indiana 46619. Marguerite attended this camp in her childhood and felt it was an important influence in the development of her Christian values. It continues to serve underprivileged children today
