Carl John Swanson
Fireman 1/c Carl John Swanson, aged 21, who has been missing in action off Borneo since June, has been declared dead by the navy department .The son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl . Alex Swanson, 1745 Marine street, he was serving aboard the Salute which was conducting a pre-invasion sweep off Brunei Bay in North Borneo June 8, when he met his death. The ship struck a mine caused an explosion in forward engine room, where Swanson was on watch.
He was graduated from Riley High school and entered the navy in October, 1943. He completed recruit training at Great Lakes, Ill., and was sent to the Pacific in January,. 1944. was born in Mishawaka Aug. 21, 1923.
He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. John C. Bayman, of South Bend, whose husband, a yeoman, first class in the navy, has been serving with the Pacific fleet for two years
